Tab and Enter keys

Is it better to use the TAB or ENTER key?

The two keys act in different ways depending on the type of field that has the focus at the moment.

For a TEXT FIELD such as a company name, or a currency amount, pressing TAB and ENTER are interchangeable.

In the field above, you can press either TAB or Enter to accept the value entered and move on to the next field.

IMPORTANT NOTE: A field is not "saved" until you move OFF of the field. So, before pressing the Save button to save your changes, you should ALWAYS tab (or enter) to the next field.

For a BUTTON such as Print or Preview, pressing TAB moves to the next button, while pressing ENTER is like clicking the button with your mouse. In the picture below, the Preview button is highlighted. Pressing Enter will act the same as clicking the Preview button with the mouse.

TIP: Notice that the underlined characters in the picture. These are HOT KEYS. So to Cancel the print operation, you can press ALT-C on your keyboard. Print is ALT-P

For a Check Box such as the Active Account box on the Staff screen, pressing TAB moves to the next field. Pressing ENTER will change the check box (as though you clicked the box with your mouse) and then move to the next field.

TIP: You can also use the space bar to turn a check box on and off.
